Interview: Moscoman says your life will change if you wear earplugs
Hailing from Tel Aviv, Chen Moscovici is more than just a producer and DJ under his Moscoman alias. Through these, plus fronting a band and running a label, namely Disco Halal, Chen makes a conscious effort to represent the Middle East in his musical endeavours. Not only does he represent the Middle East, but Moscoman's mixes span many regions of the globe, taking influences from far corners over long time periods.
Chen's experience and expertise is evident through his work, and this mature attitude extends beyond his artistry, to his health. Following a personal experience at the acclaimed Panorama Bar in his now home of Berlin, Chen has religiously worn earplugs whenever attending events or DJing. Here, he talks about his experience and advises both artists and punters alike to protect their ears.
Hey Chen, how are you?
I’m really good, thanks for asking.
What have you been up to recently?
I’ve been mainly touring since April, making music, working hard.
When did you realise you had to start protecting your ears and what triggered this?
I realised years ago that the whole scene is too loud for me. I had a custom pair made for me around 7-8 years ago, but I could never wear them, I wasn’t comfortable with them, but two years ago after my debut Panorama Bar gig, I went home and I had the worst tinnitus for a few weeks. Since then I decided - never again, I’m gonna wear them all the time.
How often do you wear earplugs? How have you found wearing them when DJing/producing?
These days I wear earplugs in any given situation - planes, venues, naturally when I DJ. For production I don't use earplugs, the environment is controlled.
What’s the reception been like from other artists when you wear them?
I’ve never thought about what other people think, but I think it’s stupid they don’t wear a pair.
Having grown up in Tel Aviv and moved to Berlin, do you see a difference in the amount of artists and fans wearing earplugs between each city?
In Tel Aviv nobody is using earplugs, also in Berlin nobody wears them. People in the Netherlands wear them the most I feel.
If there’s one piece of advice you could give to artists and/or fans with regard to protecting their ears, what would it be?
One piece of advice I can give is wear fucking earplugs, your life will change. The amount of stress and fatigue loud noise creates in your body is unbelievable. It's bad enough that we naturally lose 1 kHz every 10 years, why make it worse?
What’s next for you?
Next for me is more of the same, please: good times.
